A village in Yemen

Yemen in a desert country located on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, bordered by the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in the west, Saudi Arabia in the north and Oman in the east. With the exception of the coastal plains in the west, Yemen is continuously elevated with high and dry mountains having jagged peaks and plateaus covering most of the country. Yemen has no permanent rivers, but the highland regions are interspersed with several seasonal river valleys, called Wadi, that remain dry in the winter months. The most notable among these are Wadi Hadhramaut and Wadi Dawan, in eastern and central Yemen.

In Yemen, Western Asia, you’ll find a village that really is well and truly unique. The village of Haid Al-Jazil looks like something straight out of Arabian Nights or a Tolkein novel.

Haid Al-Jazil is in the middle of a vast desert with barely any water resources; in fact, Yemen has no permanent rivers or lakes and the only source of water for the people who live far from the coasts comes from the ‘wadis’ (valleys and ravines that fill with water in the rainy season).

With a 360 view of the Dawan Wadi, this village really is at the heart of Yemen. The settlement’s houses are made out of huge blocks of stone at an impressive height of 150 metres.

Some of the buildings date back an amazing 500 years and stack up to 11 floors high, with a carefully arranged structure to make sure that the fragile architecture remains solid.
